Frequently Asked Questions

Projects & Services

I have an idea for a project, but I don't see it listed under your services. Can you help me?
HG Signs has handled a wide variety of branding and marketing projects in the past 20 years. Customers often come to us with projects that don’t exactly fit any of our service categories, and even if we are not able to help them out, we are often able to refer them to someone who can. The best way to find out whether or not we can help you out is to give us a quick call. We promise, if your project isn’t in our wheelhouse, we’ll let you know, and we won’t make you listen to a big sales pitch for something else.
Do you offer on-site installation?
We do offer on-site installation for an additional fee, with some exceptions. Vinyl will not stick to a cold surface, so we usually avoid installing window graphics during the winter.

We need a clean, dry, climate-controlled environment in order to install vehicle graphics, and the vehicle must be able to remain indoors at that location for at least the night before and the night after installation. A car wrap installed outdoors or in someone’s home garage just do not meet our standards of quality. Usually that means on-site installation of vehicle graphics is only an option for municipalities and businesses with large fleets.

All on-site installations are scheduled weather permitting. We will do everything possible to get your project completed by the agreed-upon deadline. However, we are based in the Midwest, and the weather can be unpredictable. If your installation must be postponed due to bad weather, it will be rescheduled for our next availability, which may not necessarily be the next workday. HG Signs is not liable for installations that must be postponed due to weather.

What types and brands of materials do you use?
With over 20 years in the business, we know what works and what does not. We use the best brands in the industry (3M, Arlon, Avery, FDC, Gerber, just to name a few) and will be more than happy to show you at any time.

When comparing quotes and sign shops, make sure all your options use top quality material. You may be able to save a few dollars in the short term by choosing a lower-quality option, but you’ll end up with a sign that falls short of your vision and cannot stand up to the time or the elements.

Do I need a permit for my sign install?
If you have to ask, then we better make the call. Local townships and cities have many different building codes and retail signage rules that we all need to follow. Ann Arbor sign ordinances are particularly strict. Fortunately, we have years of experience making sure our projects comply with all local laws.

We are more than happy to help with this, but it is best if you have that discussion as we plan your project, rather than the morning of the installation.

Vehicle Wraps, Graphics & Lettering

How much does a car wrap cost?
The exact price of a vehicle wrap depends on the make and model of the vehicle, how much of the vehicle’s surface is being covered, the materials used, whether the material is printed or a flat color, and whether you already have your layout ready or choose to make use of our graphic design services. What is certain is that, in addition to its other benefits, a vinyl wrap will cost you significantly less than a custom paint job. Furthermore, even though our expert installers use the highest quality materials, HG Signs is able to offer highly competitive pricing because we do all of our design, production, and installation in-house.

For a more exact answer, please call us or send us an e-mail with the make, model, and year of your vehicle and as much information about the type of graphics you want as possible. We’ll get you a free, no-obligation estimate so you can compare our price and quality to other sign shops. If you find we’re out of your price range, we may be able to work with you to come up with an alternative approach to get the impact you want within your budget.

Can I power-wash my car/truck with the graphics installed?
No. The second image in our popular bad wraps blog post, of a police car with torn lettering, shows what will happen if you do. Power washers range from 1000-2400+ psi of pressure, and it is a quick way to remove the graphics and will void any warranty. A basic car wash is fine, but let’s stay clear of the pressure washers.
My vehicle already has graphics on it. Can you remove them before I sell it or install new ones?
Yes, we can remove anything from car decals to a full bus wrap. Please be aware that it is a difficult and time-consuming process. Before we schedule the removal, we will give you an estimate for both the cost and the time commitment involved. We may require a 50% deposit in advance, just as we would for any other project.

Vinyl graphics protect your factory paint job. If you’re having a full wrap removed, the vehicle underneath will almost always look as good as new. However, if your vehicle only had partial graphics installed, you may notice that while the paint beneath the graphics is still fresh, the paint on the rest of the vehicle has faded. The extent of the difference in coloration will depend on a number of factors, including the length of time the graphics were in place and how much time the vehicle spent out of doors with the graphics on. If you do not intend to install new vinyl after the removal, you may wish to contact a paint and body shop to have the fresh paint buffed to match the rest of the vehicle.

Graphic Design & Artwork

I have an idea for my project. Does HG Signs have a designer that can help me bring it to life?
Yes, HG Signs / Graph-X signs has design staff that is more than capable of handling anything from your basic banner to the most unique wraps and vehicle graphics. Keeping the designers in-house allows us to offer competitive rates for top quality services. It has never been easier to brand your company, or just have those custom graphics that you have always wanted.
I need to get my graphics to you. What types of files do you accept?
Ideally, we prefer all artwork to come in a vector format. Common vector formats include .eps, .ai, and .pdf. Depending on the size and type of project, we may be able to work with Bitmap images as well, but they must be large images saved at a very high resolution. If you’re uncertain whether or not we can use your artwork, please contact us so we can take a look.
How do I submit artwork/files?
If the file(s) are small enough, you can send it to us as an e-mail attachment. Otherwise, we recommend you upload the file using our client submission form. If you’re in the area, you can also bring the file to us on a flash drive.

Feel free to contact us by phone or email if you have any questions.

What resolution is acceptable for artwork submitted?
Vector images can be scaled without loss of quality, which is why we prefer to work with them. If you must use a bitmap image, we ask you send the highest resolution/DPI image you can. The higher the image’s resolution, the better quality print we will be able to produce. We prefer not to print any images from files with lower than 150 DPI. 300 DPI is ideal.
What is DPI?
DPI stands for “dots per inch.” It is a standard unit of measurement for the resolution of bitmap images. If we were to print an image from a file with a resolution of 5 DPI, the printer would produce 5 ink dots per square inch of the print. The resulting image would be blurry and all detail would be lost.

What is the difference between vector and bitmap images and which is better?
Vector and bitmap are two different categories of image files. Common vector image file types include .eps, .ai, and .pdf. Common bitmap image file types include .jpg, .gif, and .png.

As far as we are concerned as a sign shop, the primary difference between vector and bitmap images is that vector images can be scaled to any size without loss of quality. If you send us a vector image that is 1'x1', we can scale it up to 100'x100' and it will be just as clear and detailed as it was at its original size. bitmap images often do lose quality when scaled, which is why we prefer to work with vector images whenever possible.

We do accept bitmap images for some file types. However, it is crucial for you to send us bitmap images with the highest resolution possible in order to produce the best quality print. High-resolution images can require large file sizes, so it is usually best to bring these files to us on a thumb drive or send them through our client submission form, rather than by e-mail.

Scheduling & Payments

What kind of turnaround time can I expect for my project?
Turnaround time depends on the size and scope of your project, whether or not we have the necessary materials in stock, and the time of year. If your project has a short deadline, please let us know when you contact us for a free quote, and we will see what we can do to accommodate you.
When is payment expected for my job?
Payment is expected at the completion of your project. Depending on the size and scope of the project, we may ask for a deposit for materials or design services before completion, but we will discuss that with you during the sales consultation.
Do you offer partial payment plans?
No. HG Signs is a small business, and we cannot offer financing on any of our projects. In some rare cases, we may offer 30-day terms for organizations that need that time to process payment orders, such as our municipal clients. However, 30-day terms are extended at HG’s discretion to a limited number of clients and must be agreed upon prior to scheduling the project. Otherwise, payment in full is due upon delivery of your project.
What types of payment do you accept?
We currently accept cash, checks, and all forms of credit and debit cards at our physical location or over the phone. We are working with a new merchant services provider to set up online and mobile payment options. Those should be available within the next couple of weeks.
